Transcultural notes on the expression of anxiety in Greenland
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In a previous article, we described the psychotic experiences of a number of Greenlandic patients (Alberdi F, Nørgaard Kjær J, 2025). In this article, we try to place the patients in their linguistic, cultural and historical context. This contextualization displays the challenges that patients may experience in contact with a Danish-speaking therapist. The anxiety and mental confusion associated with the “double bookkeeping” of psychotic experiences, where the patient exists simultaneously in the common and in their private reality, will be reinforced in the confrontation with therapists with a different linguistic and cultural code. Despite those difficulties, the patient’s necessary mental integration process can take place in a respectful emotional exchange between patients and therapists.
