Abstract: In the brain, astrocytes are ideally positioned to couple synaptic activity and energy metabolism. They\npossess specialized processes covering the surface of intraparenchymal capillaries. Other astrocytic processes are\nwrapped around synaptic contacts that possess receptors and reuptake sites for neurotransmitters. Glutamate stimulates\nglucose uptake into astrocytes and leads the glycolysis of glucose and releases lactate by astrocytes. In the aerobic\ncondition, lactate may be the preferred energy substrate of activated neuron. Although 2-DG and FDG may reflect\npredominantly the uptake of the tracer into astrocytes and represents indirect neuronal activation, it provides a cellular\nand molecular basis for functional brain imaging.
