Abstract: This paper provides the academic life and research interests of Prof. Dr. Bernt Brendemoen, a distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the field of Turkology. Brendemoen is particularly known for his in-depth dialectological studies on the dialects of the Black Sea region. He published numerous works on the regional variation of Turkish and changes resulting from language contact. His comprehensive book on the phonological and historical features of Eastern Black Sea dialects has become a key reference in the field. His studies on the interaction of Turkish with languages such as Greek and Laz, along with his diachronic analyses of the Turkish language reform, offer original contributions to historical linguistics. Additionally, he produced notable works in lexicography and translation studies. He played a bridging role in literary translation by translating Orhan Pamuk’s novels into Norwegian. Renowned for the close relationships he built with colleagues and students, Brendemoen served as a cultural and academic bridge between Western Europe and the Turkic world. This article aims to present both his scholarly legacy and personal qualities, highlighting the lasting impact he left on Turcology.
