Abstract: This thesis focuses on the subject of cognitive diagnostic error in internal medicine; mistakes\nresulting from flaws in physicians’ reasoning processes. More specifically, this thesis addresses\nerrors caused by confirmation and availability bias. Recently, the potential of cognitive factors\nto cause faults in diagnosis caught the attention of authors and policy-makers, and the topic\nis pursued in several position papers. Nonetheless, little empirical evidence supporting\na relationship between cognitive factors and medical error exists. In this doctoral thesis, five\nexperimental studies will be presented that focus on this theme.
