Abstract: S. aureus nasal carriage has been identified as the key to \npreventing S. aureus infections. As stated earlier, to fully exploit \nthis key we will first have to unlock the fundamental mechanisms \nunderlying it. Much research so far has focused on bacterial \nfactors in trying to explain carriage. Often in vitro data could not \nbe corroborated in vivo, not to mention real life. So far, no single \ncommon genetic or phenotypic characteristics segregating \nsuccessful from less- or non-successful colonizing S. aureus \nstrains have been identified. However, lipoteichoic acid and \nclumping factor B (ClfB) have been implicated as essential \nbacterial factors for S. aureus nasal colonization recently. \nFurthermore, most studies on host factors associated with \ncarriage have been performed in the hospital setting. We, \ntherefore, decided to study the host as the main determinant of \nS. aureus nasal carriage in the community setting.
