Abstract: Midwives are key players in parenting support. This study is centered around the father and in particular paternal involvement during the first months of the child's life. This is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews conducted on eleven first-time fathers three months after the birth of their child. The main objective of the study is to define the perception that fathers have of their paternal involvement to the three months of the child. The secondary objective is to seek elements in favor of optimizing the support for fathers. Our results show that the fathers questioned describe elements in favor of a paternity that evolves towards greater investment by the father. However, inequalities persist in the parental couple concerning the responsibilities related to the child. The determinants of paternal involvement are varied, and fathers express a majority influence of extrinsic factors. Finally, the fathers describe their paternal involvement as rather satisfactory three months after the birth of their first child. However, the lack of time can reduce interactions with the child: fathers would like to invest more in time. From these elements, we conclude that the fathers questioned are more invested in their role with their child despite the external elements influencing their involvement. To optimize support for fathers and consider improving their parental satisfaction, increasing the time spent with their child by extending paternity leave or even offering courses or speaking time adapted to fathers would be relevant elements. In conclusion, paternal involvement is a major issue during the child's first years and its support and promotion are essential.
