The road best taken: couple satisfaction among married couples

Year: 2008
Type: dissertation
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study examined couple satisfaction ratings between married couples that met through an internet matchmaking website versus couples that did not meet on an online dating service. The population researched included English-speaking, heterosexual married couples living anywhere in the world. All couples completed the ENRICH Couples Scales (Olson, 1996); consisting of 35 questions that measured how satisfied a person is with their couple relationship, the quality of a couple's communication, the ability of a couple to discuss and resolve differences and the extent to which a person distorts his or her description of the marital relationship in a positive direction (Olson, 1996).Results were analyzed using the ENRICH Couple Scales Scoring Worksheet, ENRICH Norms & Cutting Points and the ENRICH Interpretation Grid.A multivariate analysis of covariance was performed to assess group differences after being adjusted for time married. Results were in the predicted direction for each of the dependent variables. When time married and idealistic distortion were used as covariates, the groups were significantly different on Conflict Resolution with respondents who met online (m=37.754)scoring significantly higher than couples who met offline (m=34.341),F(l,94) = 4.881,p=.030.According to the ENRICH Norms and Cutting Points, both populations of respondents scored "High" in couple satisfaction, couple communication, and conflict resolution. These results suggest that married couples who met on an internet matchmaking service are just as satisfied as married couples who did not meet on a dating website.v
