Training Staff in Trial-Based Functional Analysis using Behavior Skills Training
Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Trial-based functional analysis can be used to identify the function of problem behaviors. Six staff members were trained in a controlled setting with a simulated client comprising a behavior skills training package using reading materials, a PowerPoint presentation, scoring of video models and scoring peer roleplay as well as providing feedback. Procedural integrity was measured using a performance monitoring tool. The behavior skills training with the added component of active scoring of both video and roleplay as well as providing feedback themselves significantly improved trial-based functional analysis procedural integrity for all participants, with sustained integrity in half of the participants at a two-month follow-up. This suggests the need for further research to isolate the impacts of actively scoring videos and roleplay along with providing feedback. If this active scoring component alone can improve skills to an acceptable level, it has the potential to save time and recourses on staff training.\nKeywords: Behavior skills training, trial-based functional analysis, staff training, video, roleplay.
