Abstract: Background: Routine outcome measures (ROM) in psychological practice have yielded promising results in reducing dropout rates, detecting client deterioration, and improving the outcome of psychotherapy. However, limited research has been conducted on the prevalence of use, and no research on the subject has been conducted on any Norwegian sample of psychologists. Existing studies indicate that the extent to which psychologists utilize outcome measures, is limited. Method: We conducted a survey to explore the use of Routine outcome measures among Norwegian psychologists. Results: 67% of Norwegian psychologists reported that they use some sort of ROM in their clinical practice. The most important reasons for using them was (a) to measure client progress (M = 4.26, SD = .890) and (b) to find out whether there is a need to alter the treatment plan (M = 4.19, SD = .966). Of the 33% who do not use ROM the most important reasons for not using was (a) it takes too much time (M = 2.67, SD = 1.412) and (b) it creates too much paperwork (M = 2.60, SD = 1.455). Conclusion: Compared to earlier studies conducted in the U.S., the use of ROM seems to be more widespread among Norwegian psychologists. However, it is unclear whether ROM is used in a way that facilitates positive outcomes, and whether psychologists have the necessary qualifications and training in using instruments for monitoring and enhancing progress. More research is needed to explore these issues.
