Abstract: Objective: Resilience is key to coping with stress and enhancing well-being at work. We introduce Narrative Work Identity as a framework for understanding how employees’ work life stories shape and are shaped by their resilience at work. Narrative Work Identity is the evolving internal life story individuals construct about themselves in terms of their work. This study explores the relationship between Narrative Work Identity and resilience among teachers, a profession that often faces significant work-related stress. Methods: A sample of 125 teachers, who were required to be working at the time of the interview and not on any kind of leave, provided narratives of pivotal work life events, such as a low point, a turning point, and the main challenge in their work life. They also completed measures on resilience, work demands, social support, occupational self-efficacy, purpose at work, optimism, and Big Five personality traits both at the time of the interview as well as six months later. Narratives were quantitatively analyzed for themes and affective sequences of redemption, contamination, agency, and communion, which were correlated with resilience. Results: Our findings underscore the role of redemptive narratives – stories that transform negative experiences into something positive – in relation to resilience. Specifically, redemption correlated with resilient behavior at work during the time of the interview and predicted higher resilience after six months. Agency and contamination also correlated with resilience at the time of the interview. Conclusions: This research contributes to existing research by proposing Narrative Work Identity as a meaningful construct for understanding and supporting resilience in the workplace, particularly in high-stress environments like the teaching profession. Practical implications include developing organizational and managerial interventions that foster supportive environments, encouraging employees to construct redemptive narratives as one approach to enhancing resilience and well-being at work.
