Self-rated health related lifestyles of Moroccan adolescents: the effect of physical activity and sleep duration
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explored the associations of physical activity and sleep duration with self-rated health SRH in a School-aged group of Moroccan adolescents. These data come from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2020. This research involved a sample of 2100 students, 51.5% were boys, aged between 12 to 18 years (M= 15.5 years). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between SRH, physical inactivity, and sleep by gender. Half of the adolescents reported suboptimal self-rated health, while more than three-quarters were classified as physically inactive, and 56% reported insufficient sleep. Inactive adolescents had a higher risk of reporting suboptimal SRH than their active peers (OR=1.42; p=0.002). Insufficient sleep was associated with suboptimal SRH in both girls and boys (OR=1.60; p<0.0001). Although the association of sleep time and time spent on physical activity was positive and highly significant (p<0.0001). Interventions should promote physical activity and sensitize students to limit screen time to improve sleep duration and maintain their physical and mental well-being.
