Textbook Analysis for Developing Teaching Materials to Foster a Quantitative Perspective on International Finance: Focused on “Public” and “Politics and Economy”
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: We compare descriptions related to international finance in textbooks of “Public” and “Politics and Economy”, from the perspective of explaining variables affecting exchange rates and understanding them quantitatively through statistics and numerical examples. Overall, textbooks of “Politics and Economy” offer more detailed treatment of both conceptual and quantitative aspects than do textbooks of “Public”. In order to help students learn about international finance by connecting the content with the real world, it is necessary to provide numerical examples regarding the impact of economic variables on exchange rates, and to include the latest data on the balance of payments from the sources of the statistics presented in the textbooks.
