Abstract: Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders of childhood. It is characterized by seizures which are caused by sudden abnormal secretions of neurons in the brain associated with transient brain dysfunction. Depression has been often observed in people with epilepsy. However, it remains unclear how depression is associated with epilepsy. Studies in adolescents with epilepsy are rare. \nAim: The aim of this study is to determine if there is an increased chance of developing depression in adolescents who experienced seizures in early school age, compared to their healthy peers, and to determine the relationship between depression and epilepsy. \nMaterial and Method: The method used was the search of relevant Greek and international literature in databases (MEDLINE, PUBMED, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, MEDICINE, SCOPUS) with keywords: Children; Epidemiology; Epilepsy; depression; AND epilepsy in child and correlation with depression. \nResults: The results are based on seven studies dated between 2015 and 2020 and met the predefined criteria. As per the literature, an increase in the prevalence of emotional disorders in children with epilepsy compared to children with non-neurological disorders has been documented. The main factors that increase the rates of depression in children and adolescents with epilepsy are: frequent seizures, younger age of onset of seizures, female gender and type of antiepileptic drugs. \nConclusions: The development of depression in children with epilepsy is increased compared to healthy children. For this reason, medical professionals need to take immediate action. They need to be informed about the emotional behaviour of children with epilepsy so that they can provide patients with comprehensive care that focuses on the prevention and treatment of these symptoms, thus reducing the development of depression in children. with epilepsy.
