Abstract: Hypoxic (NH) or anoxic (NA) neonatal events, where there is a decrease in the oxygen content of organic tissues, represent a major public health problem. Recent studies indicate that hypoxic / anoxic events during childbirth, besides other immediate consequences, may represent risk factors for late onset of psychiatric conditions in which the prefrontal cortex plays a key role, as the Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, and schizophrenia. This study aims to establish whether the structural changes found in the prefrontal cortex of patients with these medical conditions can be reproduced in experimental models of NA. For this, using a model of NA in rats and stereological techniques, we analyzed cellular populations of the PFC commonly affected in these situations. This analysis included the quantification of the global neuronal population evidenced by NeuN immunohistochemistry (neuronal specific nuclear protein), and astrocyte populations by immunohistochemistry for the calcium binding protein S100B. Our results indicate a significant decrease in the neuron number at P14 in anoxic animals, with subsequent statistical recovery at P21 and P60. The S100B+ astrocytic population showed no significant differences between anoxic and control animals
