Abstract: Age is one of the major risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) which is considered the most common adult-onset dementia. There is little information about age-related changes during brain dementia. This study observed age-related variations in the brain throughout adulthood in sMR brain images of AD and healthy. An image is composed of an array of pixels in different brain areas. A statistical feature of this study is defined as the number of pixels in the WM part of the brain.Pixel Count as a first-order statistical feature has been considered in MRI evaluation. The Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS) is used as a database. The method consists of design and develop a computer aided system based on artificial intelligence (AI) to investigate WM changes on the sMR images. This system first extract features from images using wavelet transform, followed by applying principle component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensions of features. The reduced features were given to a kernel support vector machine (KSVM). It can automatically segmented WM and then it gave the number of pixels of the segmented WM as output. Logistic regression was used to investigate age relation with WM changes as the results of AI system in the normal and AD brain. Higher correlation of WM pixel counts with age approved that AD is characterized by the relevant involvement of the WM and age.Our approach gains additional information on the pathological changes associated with the AD as the most common brain disorder of the elderly.
