Abstract: This review article aims to analyze the impact of environmental education on the construction of a sustainable society through a critical synthesis of recent research. The PRISMA methodology was applied, allowing for a rigorous and systematic selection of 25 studies published between 2010 and 2024 in scientific databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and ERIC. The review focused on four analytical categories: development of competencies for sustainability, transformation of environmental awareness, pedagogical innovation, and community engagement. The findings reveal that environmental education promotes critical thinking, active participation, and ethical responsibility toward the environment. Additionally, the role of schools and higher education institutions is highlighted as key spaces for the curricular integration of sustainable practices. The theoretical discussion emphasizes that environmental education, when grounded in critical, transversal, and interdisciplinary approaches, significantly contributes to the social and cultural transformation required to address contemporary ecological challenges. It is concluded that strengthening environmental education is essential for training citizens capable of building fairer, more resilient, and sustainable ways of life.
