Abstract: This study examined the relationship between marriage and psychological wellbeing using a sample of 6,307 respondents from the National Survey of Families and Households panel data.Eight different marital status groups based on transitions in marital status over a 5-year period were identified and used as the sample for the study.Traditionally two major perspectives explain the relationship between marriage and individual psychological well-being.The selection perspective contends that one's health status impinges on marriage, whereas the protection perspective suggests that marriage influences one's well-being.The purpose of this study was to test these two competing perspectives and to propose an integrative model for future research.
