Subvertising: Provocation, Critical Engagement and Possibility
Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis conducts a semiotic analysis of subvertisements both traditional (printed, billboards, bus stops) and online (including video, social media and AR). Subvertising is a useful tool for countering the pervasive and permanent sense of advertising and capitalism. It achieves this by mimicking the visual styles and subverting the messages of advertising, borrowing visual authenticity to critique corporations and encourage imagination for new possibilities.
