Synthesis of novel dendritic architectures for drug solubilisation
Year: 2008
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Dendrimers are a class of polymeric macromolecule that are unique in that they have well defined, globular structures with high symmetry and low polydispersity. Unimolecular micelles, dendrimers that consist of hydrophobic cores and hydrophilic shells, have been used for the encapsulation of drug molecules. A problem that can xur in dendrimers of this type is that the core can collapse in solution resulting in a eduction in the encapsulation properties. The principal aim of this project was to synthesise a series of dendrimers that have rigid, hydrophobic cores, which will have an affinity for small lipophilic drugs, and hydrophilic surfaces to ensure the dendrimers are water-soluble.
