Stimulus Complexity and Visual Attention in Development

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Attentional development is essential for learning and effective interaction with the world. Stimulus complexity significantly influences how attention is deployed across different developmental stages in both children and adults. However, defining what makes a stimulus complex developmentally remains unclear. Research on stimulus complexity has predominantly focused on infants, showing that as children grow, their ability to manage and benefit from complex stimuli improves. Studies using the preview search task in middle childhood reveal that motion as a feature profoundly affects attentional patterns, with older children responding similarly to younger children exposed to static stimuli. This indicates that motion complexity plays a critical role in middle childhood. Adult studies using similar tasks have shown that perceptual groups as complex stimuli also affect attention. These findings underscore the importance of considering stimulus complexity when studying attentional processes across developmental stages. Continuous research is needed to further explore how stimuli and attentional development interact, which has significant implications for understanding typical and atypical development and for designing effective educational strategies.
