Abstract: The growth of urban centers brings with it a series of challenges in the development of territorial dynamics; correct planning allows urban centers to grow and integrate efficiently into the environment. The study of urban sustainability allows the analysis of the development of urban centers in social, economic and ecological aspects. This document proposes a theoretical approach to the concept of urban sustainability as a transversal concept that allows the study of urbanizations, through which the study of the city of Hermosillo, the capital of the state of Sonora in Mexico, is proposed to know the situation of urban development, as well as identifying regional development trends. The study is carried out by implementing a quantitative instrument with a Likert scale with a total of 83 items divided into five categories supported by the theoretical approach. Urban sustainability makes it possible to study the growth process and its characteristics in order to determine whether urban trends can be classified as sustainable or not. The study as well as the results raise the possibility of quantifying the quality with which urban centers are designed, their environmental impact and, as well as, their adaptation to the environment, which determine the stability for development.
