Buddharaksa Community Forest and the Wind Farm: The Power of Nature

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents an integrated approach to clean energy, environmental stewardship and moral development through the case study of the Buddharaksa Community Forest and the Nong Nam Sai–Sikhio Wind Farm in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. The study analyzes the role of wind power and solar energy in enhancing community well-being while linking to religious activities, education, and spiritual tourism. The Buddharaksa Community Forest, covering 2,189 rai under the National Reserved Forest framework, serves as a model of a “moral community” governed by the Baworn principle (home–temple–school). In parallel, the Korat Wind Energy project generates over 60 MW daily, contributing to Thailand’s clean energy transition while supporting community learning and eco-tourism. Complementary solar power systems in local monasteries and meditation centers reinforce the synergy between renewable energy and Buddhist practice. Findings highlight the environmental, economic and moral benefits of integrating faith-based initiatives with renewable energy projects: reducing fossil fuel dependency, lowering household and temple energy costs, creating jobs and transforming temples into centers of both Dhamma and energy education. Ultimately, the Buddharaksa Community Forest and the Wind Farm exemplify a holistic model of sustainable development where energy, morality and the environment converge, providing lessons for communities nationwide.
