Evolutionary Psychoanalysis: Integrating Freud's Mind with Evolutionary Biology (V.3)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Evolutionary Psychoanalysis proposes a framework integrating Freudian psychoanalytic theory with evolutionary biology. Human behavior is primarily determined by hardwired genetic traits, with the environment modulating expression rather than overriding predispositions. Survival and reproduction account for the majority of behavior (~60–80%), while stochastic variation, minor mutations, or environmental influences explain the remainder. Freudian constructs are reframed as evolved adaptive mechanisms: unconscious drives reflect survival/reproductive imperatives, the superego represents internalized social/ethical constraints, and the ego mediates behavior as the mechanism of expression. Empirical support comes from fMRI, epigenetic studies, behavioral genetics, cross-cultural surveys, and Libet-type experiments. Ethical implications are addressed descriptively, supporting evidence-based approaches to punishment, rehabilitation, and societal protection.
