Air Conditioner Temperature Settings and Environmental Suitability
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the suitability of air conditioner (AC) temperature settings in everyday living and working environments, with a focus on real operational conditions at the Buddhist Dhamma Dissemination Unit of Alinda Garden Co., Ltd. The research examines the practical differences between 24°C and 26°C settings in office rooms, meeting spaces and resting areas, highlighting the interplay of relative humidity, sunlight exposure, number of occupants and room materials. Field observations indicate that setting the AC to 26°C does not always guarantee energy savings when humidity accumulates, often leading to discomfort and subsequent lowering of the temperature. Conversely, initiating cooling at 24°C enhances dehumidification efficiency, allowing later adjustment to 25–26°C once the room stabilizes. Additional findings reveal that west-facing rooms and high thermal-mass materials store heat longer, requiring lower initial settings, while higher occupancy significantly increases heat and humidity loads. Practical guidelines are proposed for bedrooms, offices and small institutional spaces without auxiliary equipment such as fans or dehumidifiers. The results suggest that efficient AC usage depends not solely on temperature settings but on holistic consideration of humidity, airflow, occupancy and building materials. The study provides actionable recommendations for households, offices and small institutions to balance comfort and energy efficiency without additional investments in specialized equipment.
