The Cold Matterphor as a Necrocene Marker: A Biologist's Cartography of the Diminished Material Eventfulness
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Capitalism commodifies science, embedding the ecocentric biologist within the very ecocidal and malzoan practices they critique. To break the pact of silence, I develop an autoethnography. Through a hybrid epistemology intersecting empirical practice, creative writing, and sound studies, I employ melancology – a critical discourse from the nexus of black metal and ecology – as my primary analytical tool. I demonstrate how cold matterphors (material metaphors) reveal ontological resonance between empirical, phenomenological and aesthetic evidence, culminating in a performative synthesis of laboratory and creative praxis that enacts death activism. As the first death study to use these methods in tandem, it connects ahumanism, material ecocriticism and scientific practice, suggesting applications across natureculture fields, from bioethics to astrobiology.
