A versatile framework for high-fidelity computations of high-speed reactive multi-material dynamics

Abstract: This research presents a versatile multi-physics computational framework designed to simulate high-speed interactions between multiple materials, incorporating chemical reactions, extreme levels of deformation, damage/breakage, and phase change. While energetic materials (EMs), such as those used in propulsion, munitions, and pyrotechnics, serve as a primary application, the framework's generality in handling compressible multi-component flows extends its applicability to various high-energy scenarios.Energetic materials (EMs) are characterized by their rapid release of heat energy, known as 'detonation,' which can be both beneficial and risky. Controlled explosions are useful in many engineering applications, but accidental detonations pose significant safety challenges. The shock to detonation transition (SDT) is a process that occurs during the initiation of these materials. It is a complex phenomenon wherein various mechanisms are at play over a range of length and time scales. Analysis at a macro-scale alone does not provide sufficient insight into the sensitivity prediction for SDT. Understanding the shock initiation and the subsequent evolution of reaction at the grain-scale (meso-scale) is crucial for accurately characterizing the overall detonation process.
