Social Perceptions on Female Perpetrators of Child Sexual Abuse in Mazowe District of Zimbabwe

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The primary focus of this research was to explore the societal perceptions surrounding female offenders of child sexual abuse (CSA) within the Mazowe District of Zimbabwe. This study employed a qualitative research methodology. A sample of 42 key informants participated in the study. Data was collected using key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and documentary searches. The study findings indicated that there exists a notable disparity between the documented instances of abuse by women and the community's perception of such events. Community's responses are often inadequate due to social norms that prioritise family over children. The study concludes that societal attitudes frequently downplay the accountability of female offenders in comparison to their male counterparts.
