Mobile Consumer Architecture for Named Data Networking

Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Named Data Networking (NDN) is an Information Centric Networking (ICN) paradigm that uses the name of the requested data for its routing protocol as opposed to IP. One of the main benefits of NDN is in-network caching, allowing for retrieval of data without traversing the full path from the consumer to the producer, making data independent from the location of the producer. A critical research challenge for NDN is mobility support. There are several different approaches to Mobility in NDN: Producer Mobility, Consumer Mobility, and Producer/Consumer Mobility. This thesis explores several topics in NDN mobility support. I first provide a comprehensive literature survey for NDN mobility support. I then examine a Proactive Caching for Consumer Mobility. I define a general-purpose architectural model for precaching. Based upon this architectural model, I next present a probabilistic analysis for precaching. I then design and implement a proof of concept software and a numerical simulator that supports precaching for a mobile consumer. Finally, this proof of concept is hosted on GitHub, allowing for accessibility and additional contributions as an Open Source software. My research serves as a reference for future NDN support of consumer mobility.
