RRMS™ Version 3.0 — Respiration as a Master Biological Interface: A Unified Cyber-Physical Framework for Respiratory-Gated Mechanosensory Stimulation, Autonomic Coordination, and Experimental Neuromodulation in Disorders of Consciousness
Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: RRMS™ Version 3.0 — Respiration as a Master Biological Interface presents an expanded scientific and engineering framework for respiratory-gated mechanosensory stimulation, autonomic coordination, and experimental neuromodulation in disorders of consciousness. Version 3.0 reframes respiration not only as a physiological process and potential stimulation target, but also as a biological timing infrastructure through which multiple compatible stimulation modalities may be synchronized relative to inspiration, expiration, and respiratory transition states. The framework consolidates earlier RRMS technological generations into a unified modular cyber-physical architecture. Vibro-acoustic respiratory interfaces, pneumatic thoracic actuation, peripheral magnetic stimulation, pixelated respiratory wavefields, distal respiratory-gated stimulation, and compatible dynamic body–surface interfaces are organized as interoperable modules coordinated by a common Respiratory Master Clock (RMC). The publication develops formal engineering representations of respiratory state and phase, multimodal stimulation, spatial respiratory wavefields, autonomic state space, multidimensional stimulation dose, physiological sensing, closed-loop control, safety-state architecture, multimodal biomarkers, component-isolation experiments, respiratory-phase controls, sham conditions, and staged translational validation. A central conceptual contribution is the integration of physiological time with programmable mechanical space, allowing mechanical stimulation environments to be expressed as functions of respiratory phase. Version 3.0 also introduces autonomic coactivation as an experimentally measurable candidate state rather than a predetermined therapeutic outcome. Proposed measurable endpoints include respiration, electrocardiography (ECG), heart-rate variability (HRV), respiratory sinus arrhythmia, electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), hemodynamic variables, pressure and force measurements, respiratory–neural coupling, autonomic-state variables, and validated behavioral measures of consciousness. RRMS™ Version 3.0 explicitly distinguishes established physiology from engineering propositions and experimentally unresolved hypotheses. The framework does not establish restoration of consciousness, reversal of structural brain injury, therapeutic efficacy, a universal respiratory frequency, or regulatory clearance. Proposed physiological and neurological effects remain hypotheses requiring independent experimental validation. The publication defines prospective falsification criteria and a staged research pathway progressing from bench validation through controlled physiological investigation, intermediate validation, and, only following appropriate prior evidence and authorization, research involving disorders of consciousness. Research status: RRMS™ Version 3.0 is an open scientific and engineering research framework intended for scientific discussion, engineering evaluation, independent replication, falsification, prior-art analysis, and further experimental investigation. It is not medical advice, a treatment protocol, evidence of clinical efficacy, or authorization for human use.
