Gender Disparities: A Focus on Ethiopian Immigrant Women in U.S. Workplace Environments

Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis examines the experiences of Ethiopian immigrant women within the U.S. labor market. It seeks to elucidate the complex interplay of structural barriers and cultural dynamics that shape their socio-economic integration. The objectives of this study are twofold: first, to investigate the specific challenges these women encounter as they navigate the intricacies of employment in a foreign context; second, to explore the strategies employed by these individuals in overcoming those challenges. Methodologically, a mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to garner a comprehensive understanding of the experiences of Ethiopian immigrant women. The findings indicate that these women confront racial discrimination, cultural dislocation, and economic marginalization. Nevertheless, they also demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability. They employ various strategies—such as community support networks and educational pursuits—to mitigate these barriers and achieve personal and professional goals. The implications of this research extend beyond mere documentation of challenges; they advocate for a nuanced understanding of intersectionality, recognizing how overlapping identities—such as race, gender, and immigration status—interact and create unique experiences in the labor market. This study significantly contributes to existing literature, underscoring the necessity for policymakers to address the specific needs of diverse immigrant populations. These groups are often overlooked in broader discussions of labor integration and economic empowerment. While the research offers a detailed examination of Ethiopian immigrant women's experiences, it also calls for further inquiry into the broader social and political frameworks that perpetuate inequality within labor markets. Shedding light on the intersectional nature of their struggles and successes, this study seeks to foster a deeper understanding of how policies can be developed to promote inclusivity and equity for all immigrant populations.
