Development of a Vision Guided Cartesian Pick-and-Place Robot for SMT Assembly using Embedded Motion Control
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Surface Mount Technology (SMT) has become an essential aspect of modern electronics manufacturing, requiring high precision and repeatability in component placement. To address the challenges faced by small to medium scale manufacturers such as dependence on manual assembly, quality inconsistencies, and high labor costs a novel Cartesian Pick-and-place (PNP) robotic system is proposed. The system is designed to automate SMT assembly tasks by leveraging a linear motion-based architecture that enables accurate and repeatable movement across the X, Y and Z axes. The PNP robot integrates real time vision feedback, optimized motion planning, and closed loop motor control to ensure precise alignment and placement of com- ponents on printed circuit boards (PCBs). A series of experiments were conducted using standard SMT components and varied board layouts to validate the system’s performance. The results demonstrate high placement accuracy, reduced error rates, and improved operational efficiency compared to manual assembly. The proposed system offers a scalable and cost-effective automation solution for electronics manufacturers, especially in contexts where conventional industrial PNP systems are prohibitively expensive or oversized.
