Harnessing Celebrity Influence for Social Behavioural Transformation: A Strategic Policy Approach in Media and Entertainment
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper investigates the underexplored potential of celebrity influence as a strategic instrument for social transformation and youth development. While celebrities often shape fashion, language, and consumption patterns among young people, the study argues that when guided by structured behavioural policies and regulatory frameworks the entertainment industry can be repositioned as a corrective force for societal behaviour. Grounded in social learning theory, behavioural policy models, and the social responsibility theory of the press, the paper presents case studies from the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and the United States to highlight both the risks of unchecked celebrity influence and its capacity for positive change. It proposes a collaborative framework in which governments, media regulators, and entertainment stakeholders engage celebrities as partners in promoting dignity, honesty, responsibility, and civic consciousness. The article concludes that integrating celebrities into policy-making and governance processes provides an innovative, cost-effective approach to addressing moral decline, strengthening civic responsibility, and advancing sustainable social development.
