Abstract: This article examines the state of XII Corps, which occupied the most threatened corner of England during the invasion crisis of 1940. Drawing upon research in the UK National Archives and secondary sources, this article argues that early-war British commanders better understood the tactical challenges posed by the German Army than has previously been accepted, and in particular understood the need for dynamic training and a mission-specific doctrine.
