The Road as an Essential Element in the Composition of Contemporary Holocaust Places of Remembrance
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article deals with the role of the road as a key compositional element in contemporary memorial places, from the perspective of landscape architecture. The author examines the forms and symbolism of paths, which are not only a communication system, but also shape the aesthetics and content of a place. The road organises the space, it is the canvass of the composition which, by delimiting the zones, creates a path leading to the central element of the commemoration – the monument, which is the carrier of ideas and symbols. The aim of this study is to determine the rank of the path in the composition of contemporary memorial sites, thus developing guidelines for the design of these spaces.
