The Fetish of Ruin or Revitalization of a Monument?

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Polish conservation doctrines use terms relating to ruin, most of which are undefined. Nineteenthcentury conservation doctrines and the Venice Charter have long lost their relevance, and the restoration and reconstruction procedures of an architectural monument are still rare in Poland due to the fascination with 'permanent ruins'. Reconstruction as a response to the social demand for the care of monuments, refers to the possibility of contemporary use of a monument, and its value is not determined solely by the authenticity of the matter.
