The Sequencer: A Gamified Solution for Confident Coding

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Mastering loop structures are a common hurdle for novice programmers, often leading to confusion, low confidence, and coding errors. Repetition structures, such as the while loop, require learners to understand logical sequencing before they can confidently produce accurate code. However, many students struggle with this abstract concept, resulting in frustration and disengagement. To address this challenge, The Sequencer was developed, a gamified, interactive learning innovation designed to demystify loop logic and foster active participation in programming. This tool offers a cost-effective solution for scalable improvement in coding education. Developed using the accessible LearningApps.org platform, The Sequencer provides students with jumbled coding steps they must rearrange, reinforcing logical thinking through a fun, visual, and low-pressure activity. The game is easily accessible via smartphones, ensuring inclusivity for classrooms with varying levels of digital infrastructure and resources. Classroom implementation across five student groups demonstrated significant impact. Pass rates increased notably, with several groups achieving 100% success after engaging with the game. Students consistently described The Sequencer as fun, engaging, and effective in helping them visualise coding structures, apply knowledge, and build confidence. Lecturers also reported reduced teaching time and observed that students could automatically imagine algorithm structures based on scenario-based questions, making lessons more efficient and impactful. Beyond repetition structures, the design principles of The Sequencer can be extended to other programming topics such as conditional logic and nested structures. This accessible, affordable, and scalable innovation offers a practical pathway to cultivating digital competence, logical reasoning, and programming confidence among learners.
