Metaverse Spider-Web Urban Design Theory
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study introduces the Metaverse SpiderWeb Urbanism Theory as a conceptual framework for rethinking urban design in the age of smart cities and immersive technologies. The theory draws on the metaphor of a spider web to explain how virtual layers, digital infrastructures, and physical environments interconnect in shaping future urban forms. By analyzing spatial interactions within metaverse environments, the framework explores how digital-physical integration can enhance urban resilience, safety, and inclusivity. The paper highlights the implications of spiderweb-inspired urbanism for spatial morphology, governance, and citizen engagement, particularly in relation to sustainable and adaptive city-making. Findings suggest that metaverse-driven design logics can create more dynamic, interconnected, and participatory urban spaces, while also raising questions about equity, data governance, and ethical urban futures. This theoretical contribution provides a basis for further empirical research and supports ongoing debates on how emerging technologies reshape urbanism in both global and local contexts.
