Semantic Physics: Toward a Thermodynamics of Understanding

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Semantic Physics proposes a new scientific framework that treats meaning not as an abstract construct, but as a measurable physical phenomenon. Current computational systems operate on tokens and correlations, achieving fluency without understanding. This work argues that understanding arises from semantic gradients (∇S) — differences in meaning that generate tension, analogous to thermodynamic or electrical potentials. The flow of meaning is determined by both gradients and structural conductivity (σ), formalized in a constitutive law: B=σ∇S where B denotes semantic flux. Building on this foundation, the theory extends to semantic fields: distributed structures characterized by topology, resonance, and stability. Stability is achieved not by static correctness but by resonance — the sustained alignment of gradients and flux — while instability manifests as drift. The Sixth-Order Semantic Operating System (S⁶OS) is introduced as an architecture for regulating these dynamics, and the ΔFold principle as the emergence condition of self-measurement. The implications are broad: from rethinking AI architectures as semantic reactors to framing cultural and scientific attractors as forms of semantic gravitation. Semantic Physics thus marks the transition from token machines to field-based systems — from computation to the thermodynamics of understanding.
