Brahmins in History and Today: Victims, Villains, or Convenient Targets?
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: “Brahmins in History and Today: Victims, Villains, or Convenient Targets?” looks at the long and complicated story of Brahmins in India. For centuries they were respected as teachers and keepers of knowledge, yet at the same time they were often blamed for being too privileged or controlling. The book shows how they faced persecution under the Mughals, were slowly pushed aside by the British, and later played a big role in India’s freedom struggle. It also explains how, over time, Brahmins stopped being seen just as individuals and instead became a symbol of “Hindu privilege,” which made them easy targets in politics and even in global debates—like the recent controversy over Russian oil. The work admits that some Brahmins did misuse their position in history, but it also reminds us of their huge contributions in preserving India’s culture, knowledge, and reform movements. The message is clear: making Brahmins the villains of every story only creates deeper divides, weakens India’s knowledge systems, and drives away talent. What India really needs is unity, balance, and a fair look at history so that the future is not lost to blame and bitterness
