The Silent Power of Glycaemic Control in Wound Healing: Lessons from the Ward
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Non-healing wounds remain a persistent clinical challenge, particularly in patients with underlying metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. Despite technically sound surgical interventions, impaired wound healing can lead to prolonged hospital stays, increased risk of infection, and psychological burden for both patients and healthcare providers. This narrative reflection explores the case of a diabetic patient whose postoperative wound failed to heal as expected, revealing the profound impact of systemic metabolic dysfunction on local tissue recovery. Drawing from firsthand experience during a surgical rotation, the article underscores the importance of viewing wound healing not merely as a local issue, but as a multifactorial process intricately tied to broader physiological and metabolic health. The case prompted a deeper appreciation for integrated perioperative care, emphasizing that effective surgical outcomes rely not only on technique but also on optimizing the patient’s systemic health, particularly glycaemic control.
