Privacy Fatigue: Why Users Stop Caring About Their Data

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines privacy fatigue—the weariness that sets in when people face constant privacy policies, consent forms, and confusing data practices. Drawing on ideas like decision fatigue, information overload, and the privacy paradox, it shows how overwhelming systems and limited control can cause users to disengage. The result is not only careless choices by individuals but also declining trust in organizations and limits to current regulations. The study suggests that simpler, user-centered approaches may ease this burden and help restore meaningful engagement with privacy.
