Lecture "Citizen Science in the Humanities and Social Sciences" (BA 1st year)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Note: The slides published here are based on a German-language lecture that I gave during my time at the Institute for European History in Mainz (2019-2021). I first developed an English-language version in 2025 for the course "Making Knowledge" in the BA Digital Society at Maastricht University and revised and expanded the slides for the same course in 2026.Abstract: This lecture centres on citizen science and related forms of engagement as a public good and discusses why citizen science has become more and more important since the 1990s, how and why the current funding landscape promotes it, and what benefits we can ideally expect for researchers and participating non-academic communities. Furthermore, the lecture addresses challenges and risks of engaged research and looks at the historical roots of "amateur" engagement. The lecture is based on academic literature but also includes Monika Barget's own experiences with public engagement projects. In the last section of the lecture, students are pointed to European, Dutch and local resources developed specifically for citizen engagement.
