Real-Time Detection and Analysis of Transient Astrophysical Events Using AI-Assisted Techniques

Type: article
Abstract: This paper introduces an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted method for the real-time detection and analysis of ephemerical astrophysical signals based on the use of powerful machine learning techniques to deal with the challenges to the analysis of massive amounts of data arriving in complex time constraints. Transient events, such as supernovae, gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave signals are unpredictable and in some cases short-lived and must be rapidly identified and classified in order to obtain the maximum scientific value from these phenomena. Traditional methods of detection are often ill suited to the high volume, noise, and complexity that are inherent in streams of astrophysical real-time data. To address these challenges, we propose the application of machine learning (in the particular, convolutional neural networks, or CNNs and other deep learning models), to automate and augment the detection process. Our framework combines AI and existing observation infrastructure so continuous monitoring of potential transient events can happen - and as immediate flagging of potential transiting objects occurs. The way the system works is through the real-time processing of data from all sorts of different observatories and instrumentation, processing massive data volumes in very little time, in order to find previously missed or under-identified events. We also examine how we can use anomaly detection methods to help separate the actual astrophysical signal versus the noise to improve the overall accuracy and efficiency of the process. The findings are illustrated with simulated and real sets of observational data, including a demonstration of the system's successful detection of multiple different returning types of astrophysical transients at diverse wavelengths. The proposed methodology brings not only an increase in the speed and trustability of transient events detection but paves the way to future developments in multi-messenger astrophysics: the speed of the response during a transient event and cross-disciplinary analysis are of primordial importance in this. This paper speaks about the potential implications for future observatories and future missions and highlights the importance of AI in revolutionizing how we explore and understand transient phenomena in the universe.
