Secondary Discharges, Side Flashes

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the phenomenon of “Secondary discharges” or “Side flashes,” which are branching lightning discharges that occur in association with a primary lightning strike. The analysis is divided into two main dimensions: natural side flashes and those related to electrical equipment. In natural settings, side flashes often occur when a primary strike hits tall objects such as trees or poles, with electric currents branching outward toward nearby objects, posing severe risks to human and animal life. In the context of electrical equipment, side flashes are associated with antennas, communication towers, and electrical circuits that provide alternative pathways for current flow, causing visible arcs from devices and damaging connected equipment. Environmental factors such as high humidity and low atmospheric pressure play a critical role by reducing air resistance, thereby increasing the frequency and visibility of side flashes. The article further suggests preventive measures, including the installation of lightning rods, grounding systems, and surge protection devices, in order to mitigate risks to both life and property.
