The Effect of Plumage Colour on the Reproductive Performance of Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This study investigated the impact of plumage colour on the reproductive performance of Japanese quails in Nigeria. A total of 80 birds (40 Black and 40 White) were managed under a Completely Randomized Design. Results revealed that the White strain attained sexual maturity earlier, had a higher body weight at first egg, and demonstrated superior weekly egg production and egg weight. Although the Black strain showed a marginally higher fertility rate, hatchability was comparable. The White strain also produced significantly heavier chicks. The study concludes that plumage colour is a significant factor in quail reproductive traits and recommends the White strain for enhanced productivity in Nigerian quail enterprises.
