Behavioral and Cultural Dimensions of Canine Howling

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Canine howling is a behavioral trait inherited from their wolf ancestors, functioning as a long-distance communication tool to indicate location, gather the pack, and defend territory. It also reflects emotional states such as loneliness, stress, or excitement, with certain breeds genetically predisposed to howl more frequently. At the same time, cultural interpretations of howling vary across societies. In traditional Thai beliefs, it is often regarded as an ill omen linked to spirits, whereas in Western contexts it symbolizes mystery, solitude, and supernatural power. These cultural readings highlight the human tendency to assign meanings beyond the biological reality. This article explores both the behavioral and cultural dimensions of canine howling, illustrating how animal instincts and human beliefs coexist and shape perceptions of this enduring phenomenon.
