Interpretative phenomenological analysis of rebuilding self and relationships through 12-step recovery programs
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the experiences of individuals with compulsive sexual behaviors participating in 12-step recovery programs. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore personal narratives and recovery journeys. Findings highlight two major themes: the transformative role of community in fostering a sense of belonging and identity, and the personal empowerment through shared experiences and mutual support. The study concludes that 12-step programs are instrumental in facilitating recovery, offering crucial social support, and aiding in the construction of new, healthier identities for participants.
