TheEvolution of India's Education System: From Buddhist Universities to British Reforms

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Education has always played a pivotal role in shaping societies, yet in India, its accessibility has been dictated by socio-religious structures. Some claim that India had an advanced and egalitarian education system since ancient times, while others argue that modern education was introduced only by the British. The reality, however, is more nuanced. - The Buddhist education system (c. 500 BCE - 1200 CE) was the golden age of rational and inclusive education in India. - The Gurukul system that followed was an exclusionary model that denied education to women and lower castes. - British education reforms introduced structured learning for all, which was instrumental in fostering a rational mindset among Indians, leading to organized resistance and ultimately independence. This paper critically examines these phases of India’s education system and highlights the role of education in shaping India's socio-political landscape.
