Internet of Things-Based Monitoring System on the Extreme Upwelling Event in the Seas of Alor Kecil, Alor Island, Indonesia

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: An Extreme upwelling Event (EUE) in the Mulut Kumbang Strait, Alor Kecil, Alor Island, Indonesia, is the only phenomenon in the world that can reduce the sea temperature to the level of 12°C, where none of the other tropical seas has such a cold temperature. Due to its uniqueness, EUE has the potential to be promoted as a world-class tourism event. Since EUE is generated by tidal forces, it is necessary to establish a continuous monitoring system on tide and seawater temperature to understand the characteristics of EUE and to provide the real-time status of EUE to help the stakeholders in arranging the tourism event. We have designed and installed an Internet of Things-based monitoring system at the Mulut Kumbang Strait, Alor Kecil Harbour, to supply real-time tide and seawater temperature data information that can be accessed through a website. We use Arduino UNO Wi-Fi Rev 2 for the microcontroller; SMA PT-1000 and ultrasonic A01NYUB for the temperature sensor and the water level sensor, respectively. The system that we developed has demonstrated its reliability in detecting the extreme upwelling event. Thus, both sensors have high accuracy in measuring temperature and tidal levels in the Mulut Kumbang Strait, Alor Kecil. Our system has managed to capture an unusual EUE occurrence in December and January, which has never been reported previously. Future studies are needed to comprehensively examine this phenomenon and its broader significance.
