Strengthening Academic Writing Competence of Pre-service Teachers Through Genre-based Approach in Indonesian Language Education

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Academic writing competence is a critical component of teacher education, particularly for pre-service teachers who must not only succeed in academic settings but also model effective literacy practices for their future students. However, research has consistently shown that Indonesian pre-service teachers often struggle with academic writing, especially in structuring arguments, using academic vocabulary, and adhering to genre conventions. This study aimed to strengthen the academic writing competence of pre-service teachers in Indonesian Language Education through the implementation of a genre-based approach (GBA). Using a classroom-based action research design, the intervention was conducted over one semester with 40 pre-service teachers in a state university in West Java, Indonesia. The instructional process followed the GBA teaching–learning cycle, which included building knowledge of the field, modeling and deconstruction, joint construction, and independent construction of texts. Data were collected through pre- and post-writing tests, classroom observations, interviews, and reflective journals. Quantitative results indicated significant improvement in students’ writing performance across all dimensions, particularly in organization, content development, and adherence to genre conventions. Qualitative findings revealed that students developed greater awareness of academic discourse, gained confidence through scaffolding, and valued collaborative learning, though challenges in grammar and vocabulary remained. The findings confirm the effectiveness of GBA in fostering academic writing competence and highlight its potential as a pedagogical framework in Indonesian teacher education. The study suggests integrating GBA systematically into language education curricula to better prepare pre-service teachers as both writers and writing instructors.
